Special Needs

HOBO and LYDIA are siblings and from the looks of them, one would think they were joined at the hip. These two are totally devoted to each other and it would be hard to separate them (literally) so they must be adopted together

Both are very shy and don't like to be held but *love* to be petted. As soon as you start petting them, they stretch out and start kneading. Hobo and Lydia need a quiet home where they can take their time getting adjusted.

If you would like meet them, they can be seen at the shelter during daily adoption hours. Our online application is just a click away. Please fill it out and a volunteer will contact you shortly. 1/16/08

This is Shorty an 8 yr old male Chi from WV. When he came up we noticed his front leg was deformed and he was not able to walk on it. Our shelter has taken him to Red Bank Vet Hospital and he has a growth plate injury that was never fixed. Shorty is a very sweet and loving lap dog. He is happiest when wrapped safely in your arms and being carried around. Even with his obviously painful front leg Shorty has a loving and gentle personality. The surgery for Shorty's leg was very expensive and he has follow up visits to still endure. Our shelter is a non-profit and all volunteer shelter so when special cases of vet care come along like Shorty we ask the public to help in their care. If you have it in your hearts and wallets to help Shorty get the care he needs please contact our shelter to make a donation.

HERSHEY and his brother Bosco arrived at the shelter when they were kittens. Bosco found his furrever home and Hershey is waiting patiently for his turn.  Hershey is sweet but extremely shy. He hates being in a cage and won't let anyone pick him up for fear that they will put him back in a cage. So....he spends a lot of time in the upper level kittie condos where nobody can reach him. Hershey does get along very well with the other cats at the shelter and would make a great buddy for another cat.

Got a lonely cat? Hershey would be a great playmate.

If you are interested in the possibility of adopting Hershey, he can be seen at the shelter during daily adoption hours. Please complete our online application and a volunteer will contact you shortly. 2/19/08

My name is Boomer I am a very handsome boy in need of your help. I was raised by someone who never taught me how to play with people. It is a real shame because I really do love people and every dog I meet. Because I can't play in a gentle controlled way my life is in danger. The people at my shelter love me dearly and want to send me to Texas where there is a center that says they can teach me how to play nice and some day maybe I would be able to go into a real home with people. I would like nothing more than to be a part of someone's family. I love to sit on laps and lean in close. If only I knew how to control my playing. The only problem with going to Texas is that it is very expensive and my shelter friends need help raising enough money to send me. Do you think you could help? It will cost $5000 for the rehab/sanctuary center and another $500 for my travel expenses. If you have it in your heart and can afford to help me, please contact my shelter Friends as soon as possible. I am trying to control my playing but it is very hard.

You may visit the shelter during daily adoption hours, personal checks are welcome or you can send donations online through PayPal. Please send us an email specifying that this donation is for Boomer. Thank you for you kindness. 5/31/08

Meet MaiTai and Julep! Aren't they pretty? Julep and MaiTai came to the shelter when they were about 2 months old. Unfortunately, they had not had any human contact up to that point and were very scared of human contact. They immediately went into foster care where they received daily touching and lots of human to cat conversation. Bit by bit they became less afraid but they still "froze" when they were picked up and cuddled. Surprisingly, they liked to interact with the other adult cats in the household -- cats, yes; people, maybe.

Julep and MaiTai returned to the shelter early this year. They tested negative for feline aids and leukemia, had their distemper and rabies shots and were spayed. They are TOTALLY devoted to each other; they cuddle together constantly and they especially enjoy lounging in the hammock in their kitty crate. While it might be a lot to ask of a prospective adopter, these girls MUST be adopted together. And they need to be adopted by someone withg a great deal of patience and prior experience with shy cats. If someone had a home office or a workshop where these two cats could cohabit without having a lot of interaction expected of them at first, that would be ideal.

Julep, the more trusting of the two, is a lovely soft gray tabby. Her sister MaiTai is what we call a Tabico -- a tabby with orange running through her coat. If you are interested in the possibility of adopting MaiTai and JULEP, they can be seen at the shelter during daily adoption hours. Our online application is just a click away. Please fill it out and a volunteer will contact you shortly. 5/20/2006

MANGO and KIWI are spunky sisters rescued from the streets of Rahway. Both have adjusted to life indoors and are looking forward to finding their forever home. Mango is a shy girl. She really wants to be close to her humans but is just afraid to be held. She purrs when you talk to her, and even rolls on her back but still runs for cover when you try to pick her up.

These girls are very dependent on each other and must go together. They are fine with other cats and would do well in a quiet home without a lot of activity.

You can visit these girls at shelter during our daily adoption hours. If you are interested in the possibility of adopting these girls, please fill out our online application and a volunteer will contact you shortly. 5/24/07

MOM is a sweet and gentle little lady. She is on the shy side but is very affectionate once she gets to know you. She is presently in fostercare awaiting her forever home.

Mom has tested positive for FIV, so we are hoping someone with a desire to care for a special needs kitty will come forward and give her a warm loving home. She had a rough start in life and deserves to be pampered now. With proper care and lots of love, FIV cats can live long normal lives.

Mom is a true couch potato. She loves watching Animal Planet and snoozing on the bed after a nice dinner.

If you are interested in adopting Mom, please complete our online application and a volunteer will contact you shortly.  2/26/06

Izzy is a young (about 1 year old) gentle natured, friendly and lovable German Shepherd, but her story is a heartbreaking one. In early April, a wonderful couple saw her injured on the side of Rt. 1, and was kind enough to pull over and notify animal services. Despite her condition from an apparent hit and run, a high-spirited Izzy happily licked the hand of the man who stopped to help. With no identifying tags or way to contact her owner, poor Izzy waited for nearly a week with her leg broken in multiple places until FOLAS was notified. She was immediately taken in for medical care, and she is now resting safely in foster care while we look to find her a forever home; unfortunately, given the severity of her injury, her surgery left FOLAS with quite a bill! We are seeking any donations that can help offset the medical costs we incurred with saving Izzy. We are a recognized 501(c)(3) run solely by volunteers with donations and grants.

You may visit the shelter during daily adoption hours, personal checks are welcome or you can send donations online through PayPal. Please send us an email specifying that this donation is for Izzy. Thank you for you help.

UPDATE 5/5/08: as soon as Izzy is cleared by the vet, her new adoptive family has been chosen and is awaiting her arrival to her new forever home.

If you would be interested in helping Izzy, please send donations to:

HEIDI is a 4 1/2 year old Australian Kelpie. Her previous owner had to go into a nursing home so she is back with us after being adopted out as a puppy. Heidi is not fond of the leash and would prefer a home where she could simply be a house companion and run in the yard for her exercise. She would do best with a strong older male owner. Her crate is immaculate!! So this little lady is housetrained. Heidi has developed behavior issues and has a bite history. She will need an experienced and capable person who is familiar with retraining dogs. We are hoping to find a sanctuary or rehab center for Heidi. She really is a a beautiful and sweet dog as long as you don't grab her collar or scare her.

She is spayed and up to date on her shots. Heidi would love a home of her own again. Please stop by the shelter and visit her today. She does not have much experience around small children and seems to chase cats. She does seem friendly to other dogs. Kelpies are herding dogs, and she really likes to run. Heidi does have a bite history.

If you would like to help this sweet girl out and make her a part of your family, please complete our online application and a volunteer will be in touch with you soon.  9/12/07
